Why we declared Kano governorship election inconclusive- INEC

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has declared Saturday’s governorship election in Kano State as inconclusive, following stalemate in the fiercely contested polls.

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, governorship candidate, Abba Yusuf, won the majority votes after polling 1,020,465 votes, against his closest rival, the incumbent governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who scored 987,459 votes.

Declaring the result inconclusive, the Returning Officer for Kano State, Bello Shehu, said the cancellation became necessary as the total number of cancelled votes had exceeded the margin between the two leading candidates of PDP and APC.

Mr Shehu, a professor, revealed that 128,572 cancelled votes had exceeded the 33,006 vote margin between the two leading candidates.

Giving reasons for the cancellation, the professor said incidences of over-voting and violence in some polling units dotted across 22 local government areas of the state caused the cancellation.

He revealed that 172 polling units were affected in the cancellation.

Mr Bello, who is the vice chancellor of Kebbi State University, added that 13,122 votes, termed “zero voting” were cancelled for voting without card reader accreditation.

Below are the results as presented by Collation Officers at the state Collation Centre, INEC office in Kano as reported by Daily Nigerian.
