Kano State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of 28 suspects allegedly involved in a political clash during a presidential campaign rally of Atiku Abubakar, the flag bearer of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, which took place on Sunday.

Addressing journalists at his office on Monday, the state Police Commissioner, Wakili Muhammad, condemned the incident, saying that those arrested had allegedly committed arson, thuggery, destruction of public properties, among other offences.

According to him, the clash had brought tension around the vicinity of Kano and its environs, where the suspected thugs reportedly inflicted injuries on some innocent citizens, destroyed political posters, banners and billboards.

Mr Muhammad added that the command had launched an investigation to unravel the mystery behind the incident, promising to fish out the perpetrators and their sponsors in order to face the full wrath of the law.

“Yesterday, an ugly incident happened a day before I reported to office as new Commissioner of Police. Some unscrupulous elements took the law into their hands.

“Some suspected thugs had caused tension around the city. They inflicted injuries on innocent citizens, destroyed campaign billboards, banners and posters, all in the name of political thuggery. We will not condone this, Daily Nigerian reports.

“Let me tell you that 28 suspects have been arrested on different offences, ranging from arson, thuggery, banditry among others. An investigation is underway to fish out the remaining and their sponsors. We will surely prosecute the perpetrators and they must face the full wrath of the law,” he said

The new CP stressed that his command would no longer condone brandishing weapons and thuggery around the state, promising to stop it completely and pledged to severely punish the culprits.

He said his command is striving to have peaceful elections, calling on all and sundry to contribute their quota towards achieving harmonious polls.
