A rainstorm has reportedly destroyed the food items donated by the Federal Government to Kano State as a palliative to cushion the effect of COVID-19 lockdown in the state.

Recall that on Wednesday, April 29, the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development had donated 139 truck-loads of assorted grains comprising rice, millet, maize and sorghum for distribution to the less privileged in the state.

DAILY NIGERIAN reports that the food items include 6000 bags of 50kg of rice, 42,600 bags of maize, and 17,400 bags of guinea corn.

Others include 17,400 bags of millet and 2000 20ltr jerry cans of cooking oil.

Receiving the relief items in Kano, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje had ordered that the food items be kept at the premises of Kano Agricultural Supply Company, KASCO, located at Farm Center area.

According to him, the choice of the location was carefully done in order to reach the target beneficiaries safely.

However, DAILY NIGERIAN observed that barely a month after the donation, the food items had been left at the mercy of scorching sunshine and rainstorm without distribution to the target beneficiaries.

The newspaper also observed that Monday’s rainstorm had left a large part of the grains soaked in water.

Reacting to the development, Chairman of Kano State Fundraising Committee for COVID-19, Prof.  Mohammed Yahuza-Bello said that the evacuation and distribution of the food items were scheduled to start on Thursday.

However, a member of the committee, who preferred not to be mentioned denied the claim that the rainfall had destroyed a greater quantity of the food items.

“That reports are lie. Go and see, you will see that the sacks are covered with a cloth which had been rented by the government. After all, they will soon be evacuated for distribution,” he said.
