The Kano State Police Command on Friday arrested a member representing Kiru/Bebeji Constituency, Abdulmumin Jibrin, over attack on the convoy of a former governor of the state, Rabiu Kwankwaso.

Mr Kwankwaso’s convoy was attacked by thugs suspected to be loyal to the lawmaker. The thugs allegedly barricaded a road at Kofa village and attempted to deny the motorcade passage through the village.

At least five people were killed, while several others sustained injuries as the thugs from the two camps clashed.

The house of the lawmaker was also torched, just as over 10 vehicles were razed to ashes.

DAILY NIGERIAN reliably gathered that the Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 1, Dan Bature, and the state Commissioner of Police,

Security sources said the lawmaker is currently being interrogated by the police at the command headquarters in Bompai.

It was gathered that the governor of the state, Abdullahi Ganduje, had on Wednesday pleaded with the commissioner of police not to allow Mr Kwankwaso stage the final rally, but the commissioner said he could not deny the former governor right without any reason.

“When the commissioner gave nod for Kwankwaso to stage the rally, Abdulmumin Kofa deliberately staged a rally at the area to deny Mr Kwankwaso passage through his village, but the crowd in Kwankwaso’s convoy overpowered them.

“The CP know exactly what happened. That is why he arrested the lawmaker,” said a security source familiar with the issue.

But the Kano State governor, Abdullahi Ganduje, said in a statement on Friday morning that the supporters of the lawmaker were attacked while praying for peaceful election by suspected Kwankwasiyya thugs.

The spokesman of the Kano State Police Command, Abdullahi Haruna said the police arrested 70 persons across the two major political parties including party leaders and also invited Kofa for interrogation.

Haruna noted that two persons were killed in the clash while several others were injured, adding that 20 cars were burnt and 18 other political campaign vehicles were shattered.

According to him, a community clinic was also razed but no house was either torched or put on fire.

“We invited Honourable Kofa for interrogation for the police to have more details as to what exactly happened,” the police spokesman said.
