Governor Abdullahi Ganduje of Kano has disclosed his reasons for demanding the relaxing the two-week lockdown imposed by President Muhammadu Buhari in the state.

Recall that on Thursday while inaugurating a panel of experts to support the state Task Force Technical Committee on COVID-19, Mr Ganduje, had appealed to President Buhari to ease the 14-day total lockdown imposed on the state.

Giving his reasons for the appeal during the function, the governor said that the call became in order to ease the hardship in the state, especially in the holy month of Ramadan.

He said: “We would engage the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 to seek permission to relax the total lockdown imposed on Kano.

“We are making this appeal on behalf of our people who are presently running out of food items. We would love the Federal government to relax the lockdown for a period of time to enable people stock their homes, especially now that majority of us are fasting. It will also ease the economic hardship in the state.” Daily Nigerian reports.

Recall that on that same Thursday, the state had recorded 80 new cases of the coronavirus, bringing the total infections in the 219.

The state ministry of health, via its verified Twitter handle @KNSMOH, said that five COVID-19 deaths had been recorded in the state.

“Update as at 11:58 p.m. April 30, 2020; 80 new COVID-19 cases confirmed.

“Total confirmed cases in Kano State are now 219,” it said.

The ministry advised residents of the state to comply with the government’s lockdown and stay-at-home order to break the transmission chain of the virus.
