The governor of Kano State, Abdullahi Ganduje, has imposed a total lockdown for a period of seven days to prevent the spread of Coronavirus in the state.

The decision was contained in a terse statement by Me Ganduje’s Chief Press secretary, Abba Anwar Tuesday evening.

Mr Anwar disclosed that the lockdown decision followed intensive meetings with the Chairman of the Kano State Task Force on COVID-19, Deputy Governor Nasiru Gawuna, clerics and other stakeholders.

The statement quoted Mr Ganduje as saying that from 10pm of Thursday, April 16, the state would be locked down.

He, therefore, stated that all markets should be closed and all public gatherings banned.

“From Thursday 16th April by 10pm Kano is locked down for the benefit of all in the state. All markets are closed and all public gatherings are banned.

“The lockdown is for 7 days. We then wait and see what will come up. We are hoping that Allah will see us through,” said Mr Ganduje as reported by Daily Nigerian.

Governor Ganduje explained that, within the 7 day lockdown period, the government would trace all contracts of the first case and the contacts of the other two people.

He, therefore, urged for cooperation and understanding of the situation, saying that it was a condition that necessitated doing so.

“We are going to do all that we can within the 7 days lockdown to trace all contacts of our first index case and the contacts of other two people who came back from a foreign nation and since isolated themselves. Who later turned out to be positive too.

“The disease is real. We can see how big nations are struggling hard with the problem. Our first index case was in Lagos, Abuja, Kaduna and came back home.

“When he came back he visited some places that are now under our close surveillance. All the places are fumigated,” the governor added.
